The project’s objective is to consolidate Kuujjuaq’s older area with a strategy to adapt houses and blocks to Inuit needs and practices.
Shared spaces within the existing housing blocks are connected by existing footpaths which are lined by new and renovated dwellings. These paths help maintain permeability and access within the village, to safely get to schools, services and the beach by foot. The “hearts” of each block thus become effervescent areas, extending the home’s interior space to the outside. Along the block paths, sheds, workshops, storage and meeting spaces offer opportunities to socialize, make or play in a safe and productive environment. The dwellings are renovated to better face the “heart”, with thresholds (porches, decks) that ensure an adequate transition between private and common spheres.
