Context

Thesis Project (2022)

This thesis project looks at the relationship between Inuit residents and housing designed with prefabrication and modularity in mind. More specifically, it examines the opportunities for adaptation and appropriation by asking: what are the opportunities (and limits) of prefabrication and modularity in housing design to ensure Inuit resident’s sense of belonging and “feeling at home”?

In the context of Kangiqsualujjuaq, the project explores the modularity of housing components. The results take the form of several partially prefabricated house modules, whose assembly BY and FOR Inuit residents not only makes the space their own, but also allows them to choose its components, contents and modes of assembly, to make it a culturally and environmentally appropriate home.
